Dallas Architecture Forum, the non-profit organization dedicated to providing challenging and on-going public discourse about architecture will present a moderated panel discussion on New Humanism: Taking a Stand – A Report on Ghost 13 on Tuesday, Jan. 24 at 6:30 p.m. at the Dallas Center for Architecture, 1909 Woodall Rodgers, Ste. 100. Admission is free. Andrew VERNOOY, AIA, Dean of the Architecture School at Texas Tech University, will serve as Moderator. For more information on the Dallas Architecture Forum, visit www.dallasarchitectureforum.org. For questions about the Forum, call 214-764-2406.

Within the context of New Technologies in Architecture—new materials, new geometries, and new structural strategies—Ghost 13 took a stand on the principles of Place, Craft and Community. Initiated as a retrospective of Brian Mackay-Lyons’ innovative 12 years of physically engaged, yet theoretically driven, architectural production on his stunning site west of Halifax, Ghost 13 listed among its participants some of the most talented architects practicing today. Benchmarked by presentations from Kenneth Frampton, Juhani Pallasmaa and Glenn Murcutt, the week of inspiring discussions naturally lead to speculations about the larger agenda. Was Ghost 13 merely a thoughtful reflection on beautiful architecture or did it make a claim for New Humanism within the context of an exceedingly technically driven culture? You decide, as attendees discuss the issues explicitly, and implicitly, generated by the conference.

About Mark SEXTON

Mark Sexton is a principal and founding partner of Krueck and Sexton Architects. This award winning firm is dedicated to craftsmanship, material, and detail that enables the firm’s built work to express the values of modern design with a timeless quality. The firm, Krueck and Sexton, has received numerous awards, including recognition from Interior Design Magazine, the Chicago chapter of the AIA, AIA Illinois, and a National AIA Design Award. Award winning projects include the Crown Fountain in Millenium Park (featuring his iconic project with renowned artist Jaume Plensa) and the Spertus Institute in Chicago. Its work has been published in many journals including Architectural Record and A + U. The firm’s restoration of Mies van der Rohe’s iconic 860-880 Lake Shore Drive is recognized as one of the best urban restoration projects in the world. The firm’s projects have been exhibited at the National Building Museum as a “Top Ten Green Project”, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Denver Museum of Art, and the German Museum of Architecture. Educated at the Illinois Institute of Technology, Sexton is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects and is a LEED accredited professional. He has lectured extensively and served on numerous architectural and design juries, both in the US and abroad. The following quote by Sexton summarizes his view of the importance of sustainable craft: “The foundation of our practice is rooted in our dedication to elevating the ordinary to the extraordinary through craft & materiality… making the complex look simple. Yet, we are now faced with a new challenge: the urgent need to sustain our environment. A net zero approach is the future of architecture. As architects we now have the incredible responsibility of being the environment’s number one advocate.”

As conventional energy sources diminish and more consumers demand environmentally sustainable design and construction, have we reached the end of the “bigger is better” aesthetic in residential and commercial architecture? We’ll discuss what impact a desire for a smaller carbon footprint might have on average square footages of new homes and businesses, the challenges of reducing size, and energy and resource consumption without compromising form or function, and the ways in which these smaller spaces might affect how we live, work and interact in the future.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Blair Kamin is the architecture critic of the Chicago Tribune, a post he has held since 1992. He is a winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism and continues a tradition of accessible but authoritative criticism begun by the Tribune’s first modern-day architecture critic, Pulitzer Prize-winner Paul Gapp. Kamin also serves as a contributing editor of Architectural Record magazine and was part of a team of editors, writers, photographers and critics for the magazine that in 2003 won the National Magazine Award for General Excellence.

Born in Red Bank, N.J., Kamin is a graduate of Amherst College, from which he received a Bachelor of Arts with honors in 1979, and the Yale University School of Architecture, from which he received a Master of Environmental Design in 1984. He has lectured widely and has discussed architecture on programs ranging from ABC’s “Nightline” to WTTW-Ch. 11′s “Chicago Tonight.” In 2001, the University of Chicago Press published “Why Architecture Matters: Lessons from Chicago,” a collection of his Chicago Tribune columns. He also wrote the commentaries for “Tribune Tower: American Landmark,” a guide to the newspaper’s neo-Gothic skyscraper published in 2000.

Kamin is the recipient of 30 awards, including the Pulitzer, which he received in 1999 for a body of work highlighted by a series of articles about the problems and promise of Chicago’s greatest public space, its lakefront. Among his other honors are the George Polk Award for Criticism (1996), the American Institute of Architects’ Institute Honor for Collaborative Achievement (1999) and the AIA’s Presidential Citation, conferred in 2004 in appreciation of the “rhapsodies and scoldings” that have brought architecture to the attention of Chicago’s public.

His new book is Terror and Wonder: Architecture in a Tumultuous Age.

“The Design of Sustainability – Science and Sensibility”

8 February 2011

While the practice of sustainability goes way back, it is a current topic
these days. We will be discussing sustainability in multiple contexts,
be it the newest technology, lifestyle, or time tested regional design,
and perhaps, how all of these can flow together to present a new aesthetic and approach to the built environment

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Christy MacLear is the Executive Director of the Philip Johnson Glass House. She was brought to the National Trust for Historic Preservation to develop the strategy, assemble a team and prepare the site and Visitor Center to open to the public. With just nine months leadtime, she successfully launched the site in June 2007 with three sold out seasons. With the goal to “reshape the historic house museum model”, Christy has structured a “center for Modernism” to co-lead the National Trust’s investment in Modernist preservation, managed the NTHP board approval to purchase adjacent properties to preserve the Glass House view in perpetuity and developed the “conversations” series to continue the legacy of new ideas through diverse leaders on-site.

Christy is known for her ability to conceive of and lead largescale projects through opening and on-going operations. She was the Manager of Strategy for the Walt Disney Company’s new town project called Celebration, was the Director of the Museum Campus in Chicago where she represented 3 museum boards through the re-location of Lake Shore Drive and the creation of a lakefront park, and was an independent consultant in Strategy & Visitor Experience to such clients as the Field Museum, the Cleveland Clinic and the leaders of the United Arab Emirates. She has a degree in Urban Design from Stanford University and an MBA from Wharton where she received a Barnes fellowship. She has been a professor in the graduate program of Arts Administration for the School of the Art Institute in Chicago and has served on the boards of Chicago’s Three Arts Club, the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum and Steppingstones Museum for Children.

ABOUT THE DALLAS ARCHITECTURE FORUM

The Dallas Architecture Forum provides a continuing and challenging public discourse on architecture and urban design in – and for – the Dallas area. The Forum offers presentations of architecture through public lectures by designers, critics, and historians; through topical discussions; and through occasional study tours to buildings and cities locally and throughout the world. The Dallas Architecture Forum serves as an inclusive arena where people interested in and concerned with the built environment, non-professionals and professionals alike, may interact intellectually and socially.

Our membership comes from business, development, public affairs, education, the arts and from the design fields.

This mix of interests and ties is one of the strengths we bring to our involvement with architecture.
